London City Lionesses boss reveals how club failed with bid to tempt England star Beth Mead away from Arsenal

London City Lionesses boss, Jocelyn Precheur, revealed how they tried to make the biggest splash of their short history by targeting England superstar Beth Mead ahead of their maiden season in the Women’s Super League. The newly promoted side, looking to build instant credibility among the elite, lined up an audacious move for the Arsenal talisman who was instrumental in the Lionesses’ Euro 2025 triumph.

For Precheur, the ambitious coach tasked with steering London City through their first top-flight campaign, luring a player of Mead’s stature would have been a sensational coup. But Arsenal stood firm, unwilling to even entertain the prospect of losing one of their crown jewels.

At 30, Mead remains central to Arsenal’s plans under manager Renee Slegers. Since arriving from Sunderland in 2017, the forward has not only been prolific, netting 78 goals in 225 appearances, but has also been the heartbeat of the club’s attack. Add in her contribution to Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League win last season, and it’s no wonder the Gunners slammed the door on any potential exit. Mead herself made her stance clear weeks ago, deciding to continue her long association with the North London giants.

WHAT PRECHEUR SAID

Speaking about the failed swoop, Precheur revealed the extent of their attempt: "I talked with her. It was a pleasure to talk with such a wonderful player.  She decided to stay at Arsenal and I respect this choice and this player."

DID YOU KNOW?

Missing out on Mead didn’t end London City’s summer of spending. Instead, they smashed the world transfer record in women’s football by sealing a £1.4 million move for Grace Geyoro. The French midfielder swapped Paris Saint-Germain for London on deadline day, becoming the club’s 16th signing of the window. It was a clear statement of intent. If Mead wasn’t going to lead their line, then Geyoro would be the marquee name tasked with giving the newcomers a real presence in midfield.
