Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed that they are in negotiations with Tottenham over a permanent deal for Mathys Tel.

Tel joined Spurs on loan in January and went on to make 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals. Spurs negotiated an option to buy the France Under-21 international, which stands at €50 million (£42m/$57m), but the club are not minded to trigger the clause at that figure.

Instead, Spurs are said to be exploring other options, including another loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of next season, and Eberl has now confirmed that the two parties are locked in talks. Another wrinkle is added by the fact that Ange Postecoglou, the manager who signed him, has been replaced by Thomas Frank in the Tottenham dugout.

Eberl told Abendzeitung München: “Mathys was at Tottenham for six months. He wanted to play in the U21 European championship with France, and we allowed him to.

“We’re talking to Tottenham, that’s no secret. We’ll see how that pans out.”
